2009
The composer gave a series of pre-concert lectures for the New York Philharmonic on May 29-31, 2008. On July 13, she delivered a lecture on her opera Mrs. President for the American Association for Justice in Philadelphia, illustrating it with a recording of excerpts by the New York City Opera. During September and October she conducted the Chicago premiere of Samuel Barber’s opera Vanessa with Chamber Opera Chicago; the director for this production was Francis Menotti, son of composer Gian-Carlo Menotti, who wrote the libretto for Barber’s opera. Throughout November and December, she conducted a production of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, with Francis Menotti directing the Chamber Opera Chicago.
PREMIERES
Binary for two pianos (originally a work in one movement) received its two-movement premiere July 14, 2008, at Pianofest. Pianist Liu Liu introduced the piano solo version of Peculiar Plants August 21, in Geneva, NY. Throughout May and June 2009, the commissioned work Frescoes and Ash will be introduced in performances at the Los Angeles (CA) County Museum of Art.
PERFORMANCES
Violinist Marc Levine and pianist Michael Mizrahi performed a violin and piano arrangement of Sacred Sisters, May 17, 2008, Southampton Cultural Center; while Renee and Susan Jolles performed the original violin and harp version May 19, North/South Consonance concert in New York, NY. The Long-Haired Girl for narrator, strings, and harp was presented by the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, June 5, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, IN; the same group also performed How Brer Raccoon Outsmarted the Frogs, for narrator and woodwind quintet, on July 3, in the same venue. The Corn in the Rock, for narrator, brass, and percussion ensemble, received performances July 20 at the Music Festival of the Hamptons, Children’s Museum of the East End, East Hampton, with narrator Gerard Doyle; and August 7 by the Indianapolis (IN) Chamber Orchestra, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Pianist Rosey Chan performed Rage July 25 at The Music Festival of the Hamptons. The Dallas Symphony will present a concert series April 20-23, 2009 titled “What’s the Point of Counterpoint?” which will feature four of the composer’s works.
RECORDINGS
Several of the composer’s chamber works were recorded during September 2008 at the American Academy of Music by Renee and Susan Jolles, Ken Cooper, Sheila Rheinhold, and Daniel Panner, with producer Max Wilcox for Albany Records.
