NEWS
The composer-pianist celebrated his 75th birthday (October 10, 2009) with a recording commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin. The CD, titled Celebrating Chopin and Scriabin, will be released in 2010 and will include sonatas and shorter works by both composers. Doppmann and his wife Willa have been engaged during the past two years in the recording of his compositions for solo piano, some of which have not yet been performed in public. These and other compositions are published by the Divers Company, Seattle, WA. The couple is also collaborating on an opera – The Apprentice: A Magic Comedy – partially commissioned by a group of friends and supporters. Doppmann is Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Port Townsend, now in its second season. He is a member of ASCAP (recipient of annual Awards since 1987), AMC (recipient of a Composers Assistance Grant, 2004), and Phi Beta Kappa. Included among other previous honors are the University of Michigan’s School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award (1987); a Guggenheim fellowship; two NEA chamber music consortium commissions, and winner of the Naumburg, Michaels, and Leventritt International Competitions.
