Dan Locklair returned to Yale University in June 2011 to teach composition at the Institute of Sacred Music during the 2011 Summer Term. Residencies for 2011 included Composer-in-Residence for the 2011 Carolina Chamber Music Festival in September in New Bern, NC, and a residency at Harvard in December surrounding the World Premiere of his new choral work commissioned by the Harvard Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society, WINTER (from the forgottens). Radio broadcasts of Locklair works continue to flourish, both through the many commercial CDs featuring Locklair compositions and live performances, including syndicated radio programs Pipe Dreams and With Heart and Voice.

Dan Locklair’s Concerto for Organ and Orchestra appears on a new six-CD set released in Oct. 2011 from WCPE-FM and the Eastern Music Festival celebrating the 50th anniversary year of EMF. Locklair’s work is conducted by Gerard Schwarz, with Susan Bates as organ solo.

Composer Dan Locklair was a feature on the WDAV-FM 89.9 radio/Internet program, Biscuits and Bach, 3/28/10 and 8/15/10. Dan Locklair’s A Spiritual Pair (A Diptych for Organ) was featured the Week of 7/10/10 on the nationally syndicated program Pipe Dreams (APM). In mid-2010 Dan Locklair’s music was inducted into the International Museum of Peace and Solidarity, Samarkand Republic of Uzbekistan where Locklair scores and records are now permanently on display. A concerto for organ and orchestra, commissioned by the Greater Greensboro Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, with funding from Robert A. Bearden and David C. Ratchford, for the 2011 AGO Regional Convention Greensboro, North Carolina. Performers: EMF Festival Orchestra (Gerard Schwarz, conductor) with organ soloist, Susan Bates.

Locklair’s music continues to be performed internationally and regularly broadcast both abroad and in the U.S. on radio stations such as KUSC-FM in Los Angeles and WNYC-FM in New York, as well as nationally syndicated programs such as Pipe Dreams (PRI) and With Heart and Voice. The Organ Music of Dan Locklair, performed by SAI Member Laureate Marilyn Keiser and recorded in July on the new Casavant organ at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, IN, is scheduled to be released on the Loft CD label in January 2010. His newest commission is from Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, VA, for a new work for chorus and organ, scheduled to premiere in Autumn 2010. His primary publishers are Ricordi and Subito; Subito offers a 2009 edition of his Catalogue of Works, as well as Sight & Sound: A Choral Sampler of the Choral Works of Dan Locklair . The Lilacs Bloomed, a choral triptych for SATB and piano (after Whitman) was introduced April 23, 2009, by The Wake Forest Concert Choir led by Brian Gorelick, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. Organist Thomas Trotter presented the premiere of the commissioned work Glory and Peace, a Suite of Seven Reflections for Organ, June 29, Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles, CA. In the Sight of God, for SATB a cappella, was first heard October 4, as performed by the St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys under the direction of John Scott, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY; also heard on the same program were Brief Mass for SSAATTBB, divisi, and the motet Pater Noster for SATB, divisi.
PERFORMANCES
Sonata da chiesa, for flute and organ, was performed January 16, 2009, by Carolyn Treybig and Polly Brecht, Sacred Space for the City Arts Series, Christ Church Cathedral, Nashville, TN. Rubrics, a suite in five movements for organ was heard June 25, as performed by Catherine Rodland, Belvedere Chamber Music Festival, Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church; Memphis, TN; and July 4, by Christopher Jacobson, Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC. Organist Brenda Portman presented In Mystery and Wonder (The Casavant Diptych) at the Winning Recital of Bank District British/American Organ Competition 2009, and again June 28, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, England; the work was again performed October 20 by Marilyn Keiser, Great Artists Series, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, NY. “… the moon commands…,” nocturne for soprano, flute, percussion, and piano, was heard in a July 5 performance by The Oxford Players, Oxford, England. Stirring the Silence, for divided chorus and string orchestra, will be performed March 6 by the Providence Singers and Orchestra led by Andrew Clark, conductor, Veterans Memorial Auditorium Arts & Cultural Center, Providence, RI.

The 2008-2009 season celebrates the 20th anniversary of Locklair’s most popular organ work, Rubrics, commissioned by the Pittsburgh Organ Artists Series in celebration of its tenth anniversary. Rubrics has become a favorite of organists and audiences worldwide via live performances and numerous recordings. The fourth movement, ‘The Peace May Be Exchanged,’ was heard at the funeral of American President Ronald Reagan. Locklair served as Interim Director of Music of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, NC, from June 2007-13 July 2008; he was also the Principal Guest Composer of the 42nd Annual Indiana State Contemporary Music Festival, November 12-14, Terra Haute, IN. His music continues to be performed and broadcast internationally. His primary publishers are Ricordi (for further information on Rubrics and other works: Ricordi Canada c/o Jean-Marie Barker) and Subito, which has released a new issue of Dan Locklair: Catalogue of Works, available free of charge along with Sight & Sound: A Choral Sampler of Dan Locklair .

Lord Jesus, Think on Me, for SATB chorus a cappella, was introduced March 9, 2008, by the Adult Choir of Centenary United Methodist Church, under the direction of David Pegg, Winston-Salem, NC. The commissioned work Arias and Dances, for baroque or modern flute, oboe, cello, and harpsichord, received its premiere May 4 from Rebekah Troxler, Bo Newsome, Stephanie Vial, and Elaine Funaro, Durham, NC. Organist Maureen Howell presented St. John’s Suite for organ, at the commissioning church, St. John’s Baptist, Charlotte, NC. The composer led the St Paul’s Episcopal Church Adult Choir in the June 8 premiere of The Lord Bless and Keep You, SATB a cappella, Winston-Salem, NC. St. John’s Suite for Organ was first heard in a July 19 performance by Jean Radice, Syracuse Society for New Music Cazenovia (NY) Series, First Presbyterian Church.
