Continuing to receive consecutive ASCAP rewards for the past 30 years, SAI National Arts Associate Jared Spears has been commissioned to compose a mallet percussion collection and a string orchestra piece for the Altrusa Music Publishing Co (Kendor) to be released in 2012.

2010

NEWS

Continuing to receive consecutive ASCAP rewards, Spears has been commissioned to compose a series of ten to twelve percussion ensembles for the Altrusa Music Publishing Company (Kendor) to be released in the spring of 2010. Of Dreams, Dragons, and Heroes, commissioned by the 2009 St. Louis Metro District 8 Missouri Music Educator’s Association, was premiered November 22, 2009, by the Association’s Middle School Honors Band, under the direction of Donna Pavelski, at the Lindenwood Fine Arts Center, St Charles, MO.

PREMIERES

The commissioned work A Time For Nicholas, for symphonic band, was introduced April 17, 2009, with the composer conducting the Alliance (NE) High School Symphonic Band.

PERFORMANCES

Incantation and Festal Dance was presented November 18, 2008, by the Nazareth College (NY) Percussion Ensemble, led by Kristen Shiner McGuire. Alleluias was heard February 22, 2009, in a performance by the NJ Arts Council Band, conducted by John Ondrey, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mountainside, NJ. The St. Louis Wind Symphony, under the direction of Tom Poshak, performed Winds From the Prairie, March 15, Keating Performance Center, Kirkwood, MO. The Texas A & M University Kingsville (TAMUK) Percussion Ensemble, led by Randy Fluman, played Caprice Diabolique April 14, at Texas A&M; while on May 3, the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio Philharmonic Orchestra Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Bill Patterson, performed Romantique, Trinity University, San Antonio, TX.

2009

Continuing to receive consecutive ASCAP rewards, Spears has been commissioned to compose a band composition for the Alliance, NE, School Bands to be premiered in the late spring of 2009. Three of the composer’s works, Cahokia, Praises, and Mountain Song, were discussed and analyzed in the GIA publication Teaching Music Through Performance in Beginning Band, Vol. 2, compiled and edited by Richard Miles and Marguerite Wilder. He appeared as guest composer/lecturer at the Community Music School of Webster University, St. Louis, MO, where he gave a lecture/demonstration on the process involved in creating a musical composition to 15 selected high school composition students from various areas in the U.S. as part of a program titled Advanced Composition Intensive.

PREMIERES

The commissioned work Overture Fantastica for percussion octet was introduced April 16, 2008, by the Percussion Ensemble of the Chaminade College Prep School of St. Louis (MO) led by Chris W. Treloar.

PERFORMANCES

Dance Diabolique was presented March 5, 2007, by the Dubuque (IA) Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of William Intriligator, Five Flags Theater, Dubuque. The Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestra led by Amir Kats gave a performance of Hillpoint Fantasy May 13 in Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, MN. Of Honor, Joy and Celebration was performed March 13, 2008, at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and March 16 at the Keating Performance Center, in Kirkwood, MO by the St. Louis Wind Symphony conducted by Tom Poshack. Dan Presgrave led the St. Louis (MO) Wind Symphony in an October 22 performance of Colorado Blue at the Keating Performance Center, Kirkwood, MO.
