Margaret Blackburn Biennial Composition Competition

A $1,000 grand prize will be awarded to the female student composer who submits the winning musical composition in the 2013 Biennial Blackburn Memorial Composition Competition.  Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or graduate music program in the 2012-13 academic year.

Compositions should be for a small ensemble of no less than two instruments, which may include voice, and no more than twelve instruments, including voice.  Works for instruments and electronic sounds, digital media, CD, interactive compositions or works for electronic sounds alone can be included.  No published scores will be accepted.

The 2013 deadline for submissions is April 20.  An entry fee of $20 is required and must be included with the submitted composition.  Membership in Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) is not required.  To enter, please use the application form available from Ms. McKelway and submit it along with the full score of the composition.  Only one submission per person is allowed.

Requests for applications or questions regarding specifics of the competition may be directed to Barbara McKelway.  Please include “Blackburn” in the subject.

Ensemble et cetera Composition Competition 2013

Ensemble et cetera is excited to announce a composition competition. We are hoping to commission a new piece for our instrumentation (clarinet, percussion,  and double bass) from a composer we don’t yet know. There is no entry fee.  No more than one entry per individual allowed. Please submit 2 scores of representative works. Chamber music is preferred, but anything will be accepted.  Also submit a brief prose bio, a list of compositions and a list of past performances.

Recordings of the works are welcome, but not required. If any work you send includes electronics please send either a recording of the work or a sample of the electronic sounds.  Ensemble et cetera reserves the right to choose no winner.

FETA Prize in Sound Art 2013

The inaugural FETA Prize in Sound Art 2013 aims to promote a broad range of contemporary American sound and installation arts. Artists working within the sonic arts such as sound installation, sound sculpture, sound poetry, soundscape, robotics, Internet art, and similar may submit one work each for consideration. This prize is open to any individual of any age who is a citizen or permanent resident of any North, Central, or South American country. All submissions must be anonymous. The prize will include $1,000 and a feature on the Gwarlingo portal.

The Bath (England) Philharmonia Composition Competition in honor of the Britten Centenary

Sound Connections is a three-stage competition designed to deepen the connections of the composer, through the performers, to his audiences. It will involve and engage listeners in the process of the development and performance of new music, and will give an opportunity for composers to learn how their music affects the listener.

Three finalists will have their compositions performed in a concert at Bath Abbey with the Bath Philharmonia in October and will receive a recording of their work for their archives.

The winning composition will be published and promoted by Schott Music Ltd. as hire material and as a study score, and will receive a second performance in 2014. A cash prize of £250 (approximately $400) will also be awarded to the winner.

International Composition Competition for Wind Orchestra on the Theme of World Music

An event supported by France’s Conseil General du Nord and the Conseil General of Pas-de-Calais, The competition aims to enhance the repertoire of original music for wind orchestra. All style and musical forms are accepted. Transcripts will not be accepted.  The competition is open to participants of all ages and from all countries.

The submitted works must be copyright free and unpublished both prior to and for the duration of the competition.
