Composer’s News

In March 2006, Dr. White was guest lecturer at the meeting of Baylor Association of Church Musicians, Baylor University , Waco , TX . In fall 2006, David Ashley White began his eighth year as director of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston , where is hold the Margaret M. Alkek and Margaret Alkek Williams Endowed Chair.

PremieresO Sacrum Convivium, mixed chorus a cappella, was premiered by the Palmer Choir, Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, Houston , TX , Brady and Courtney Knapp, co-directors.  Four other choral works, composed during this reporting period, will be premiered later in fall 2006.  In July, Dr. White’s newest collection of hymns, New Harmony: A Harp of Thousand Strings, created in collaboration with hymn poet Richard Leach, was introduced at the annual convention of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada , held at DePauw University , Greencastle , IN.

Performances:  The Blue Estuaries, for mixed chorus a cappella, was sung in June by the Chamber Choir from Cal State Fullerton, John Alexander, conductor, on its five-city tour of Australia Preces & Responses, also for a cappella chorus, was performed by two American cathedral choirs during their residencies in important English churches in August:  the Choir of Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, Kansas City , MO , John Schaefer, choirmaster, in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford ; and the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Houston , Robert Simpson, choirmaster, in Westminster Abbey.  Among more than 100 reported American performances during this period were these:  Homages, for mezzo-soprano, viola, and piano, performed by Valerie Komar, Erica Burton, and Keiko Sekino, at the Steans Vocal Chamber Music Program, Ravinia Festival, IL; and Four Madrigals by Michelangelo, soprano, violin, and piano, at the Grandin Festival, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, OH.

New Recording: Fanfare for Saint Anthony & For the Means of Grace and for the Hope of Glory, both organ solo, and Triptych:  Prelude, Capriccio, and Hymn, organ & brass quintet; included on Sinfonia Festiva, a CD featuring works of three composers (Daniel Gawthorp, Craig Phillips, and DAW), performed by Paul Skevington, organ, and members of The Washington Symphonic Brass (Summit Records, DCD 436)
