Elizabeth Wiegand

Biography

ewiegand.jpg - 10029 Bytes Elizabeth Grieger Wiegand, NCTM, 313 Beverly Ct., Michigan City, has received notification from the American Society of Composer Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) New York, that she the recipient of the ASCAP Popularity Award 1998-99, in the amount of $200, for the fifth time, and the third consecutive year. The award is annual, determined by a panel of 4 judges and based on survey reports and the activity and quality of performances of works by composer-members Mrs. Wiegand also won the award for 1980-81, 1981-82; 1995-96, 1996-97, and 1997-98.

Mrs. Wiegand is a life member, International Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity. She has appeared in the Pan Pipes American Composers Bureau six consecutive years and appeared as guest lecturer at Indiana Province Day at Valparaiso University in 1993. She is a member of the American College of Musicians composers panel and has had music published by RBR Communications, N. Y., and the National Federation of Music Clubs. In 1981 she was selected the National Music Educator of the year by the American Music Conference. As director of the Michigan City Interfaith Choir, she has won first place in many National Federation of Music-Clubs competitions, including American Women Composers 1978; she has appeared at Music Teachers National Assoc. and National Federation of Music Clubs National Conventions in Dallas, Texas, Williamsburg, VA and Grand Rapids, MI; Chicago T.V. specials including WGN-TV and WBBM-TV Christmas specials, in 1984. She won First Place in the International Piano Recording Competition in 1976 sponsored by the American College of Musicians, Austin, Texas. She has recorded for the Baldwin Organ Co. and the Young Chang Piano Co. In 1996 the Michigan City Interfaith Choir appeared at the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs State Convention at Valparaiso University, singing one of Mrs. Wiegand's hymns. Mrs. Wiegand was presented with membership in IFMC Golden Anniversary "Who's Who" in the "Showcase" magazine for 50 years service in the sacred music field and as a music teacher/composer 50 years. In 1984 the National Federation of Music Clubs established a biennial scholarship/ award in her name for a graduating high school senior entering the sacred music field, in the amount of $600. The Indiana Federation of Music Clubs has established a $70 Award in her name for the top Indiana Junior Composer of the Year.

The American Organist, official publication of the American Guild of Organists, recently published a picture with story of Mrs. Wiegand's accomplishments. Mrs. Wiegand serves as a board member of the Northwest Indiana Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and as organist at Community Church in New Carlisle. She has recently accepted a commission to compose piano music for Sigma Alpha Iota's 100th Anniversary in 2003. She was also selected as the "Woman of the Year 2000" by the American Biographical Institute with the Commemorative Medal.
