Composers BureauGwyneth WalkerBiographyDr. Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947) is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. Degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. She now lives on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont. Gwyneth Walker is a proud resident of Vermont. She is the recipient of the Year 2000 "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Vermont Arts Council. Walker's catalog includes over 130 commissioned works for orchestra, band, chorus and chamber ensembles. The music of Gwyneth Walker is published by E.C. Schirmer of Boston (choral/vocal music) and MMB Music of St. Louis (orchestral/instrumental music). Recent works from the 2003-4 season span a wide range of idioms. Love Was My Lord and King!, for Men’s Chorus and Chamber Orchestra, is a set of three musical settings of the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. This work was premiered by Orpheus Male Chorus in Phoenix, AZ. Symphonic Dances is a suite of five dance movements composed for the Carson City (NV) Symphony. These “very American” dances include a “Dance of the Wild Ponies,” inspired by Nevada adventures. Three Days by the Sea are songs commissioned by the Key Chorale (Sarasota, FL). This music was inspired by Dr. Walker’s Composer Residency with the Sarasota County Arts Council during the Winter of 2004. Celestial Keys, music for Tuba and Organ, was also a product of this sojourn by the sea. Projects planned for the 2004-5 season feature an “interactive” woodwind quintet for the Equinox Chamber Players (St. Louis, MO). This music, which will have audience participation, is intended for school and community concerts. Everyone performs! The composing schedule also includes several new works for chamber orchestra, a new piano trio (with narrator) and music for the Chapel Hill (NC) Community Chorus and Brass Quintet, to celebrate the Chorus’s 25th season in 2006. This variety of genres is reflective of the composer's enthusiasm for a wide range of creative endeavors. Orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal and staged works are all part of the Walker musical life. The common element is the pursuit of imaginative expression. Further InformationFor further information about Gwyneth Walker, please visit her website at www.gwynethwalker.com.
