James Bennighof

Biography

James Bennighof is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Director of the Academic Studies Division at the Baylor University School of Music in Waco, Texas. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1957, he pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond in Virginia, and received his master's and doctoral degrees in music theory and composition from the University of Iowa. His scholarly work has appeared in the Journal of Music Theory, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, American Music, College Music Symposium, and International Dictionary of Black Composers, and has recently focused on the analysis of American vernacular music. Most of his compositional works are for choir--mixed, women, or children. They often feature unique textual premises, such as unusual narratives or extended whimsical wordplay. Many of them are published by Oxford University Press; others are available by contacting the composer directly through his website, where detailed information about all the pieces, including ideas for rehearsal and performance, is provided.
