Margaret Shelton Meier

Biography

Compositions of Margaret Shelton Meier have been performed throughout the United States and in several European countries. She composes in many genres: orchestral works, chamber music, opera, art songs, choral pieces, and piano solos. Three of her works, two orchestral and one choral - The Dawning, Claremont Symphony, and Mass for the Third Millennium - are recorded on the Vienna Modern Masters label. Information about them is available through Meier's website and they can be ordered through the Vienna Modern Masters website: http://www.xs4all.nl/~gdv/vmm.

Dr. Meier has written much sacred choral and vocal music. Fostering a synthesis of Christianity and feminism is an important concern for her. Some of her most compelling art songs speak of universal issues seen through the eyes of women and celebrate the lives and strengths of Biblical women. All of her texts, many of which she writes, use inclusive language. Some of her choral compositions have been published by Abingdon Press, Lawson Gould, Gentry Publications and Thomas House.

She has written a number of compositions and arrangements for organ: some for concert performance and some as service music.

Her composition awards include the ASCAP Standard Award (1990-2001), a Margaret Fairbanks Jory award, an Axel-Stordahl Scholarship/Commission, 4th and 3rd places in the 1990 and 1994 Denver Women's Choir Composition Competition and nine awards from the Music Teachers' Association of California.

Dr. Meier received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and her Ph.D. in composition from UCLA. She has taught at a number of universities in California's two university systems and is currently a part-time professor at Mt. San Antonio College. She also maintains a private music studio and is the organist/choir director at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, La Verne, California.
