Norma Wendelburg

Biography

Norma Wendelburg has a background of college-university teaching in the midwest and Texas. She is still very active as a composer-pianist, but is retired from teaching, Her original home is at Stafford, Kansas.

Early musical education as a pianist was followed by the B.M. degree from Bethany College., Lindsborg, Kansas. The M.M. degree was earned first at the University of Michigan., Ann Arbor and later the H.M. and Ph.D. in composition were received from the Eastman School of Music, She functioned as research assistant to the Head of the Graduate Division at Eastman. Her composition studies were with Homer Keller, Ross Lee Finney, Wayne Barlow and others.

Wendelburg attended many summer sessions of the Composers, Conference at Bennington Collegep Vermont. She studied with Otto Luening, Ingolf Dahl and others; many of the early works were performed here. In the summer of 1953 a scholarship at Tanglewood enabled her to study with Carlos Chavez and to hear her first orchestral work. Two years on a Fulbright Grant (1953-1955) followed with studies at the Mozarteum and the State Academy of Music in Salzburg and Vienna, Austria. At various intervals six resident composer fellowships mere received from the MacDowell Colony and the Huntington Hartford Foundation.

The compositions use many media and range from symphonic works and string quartets to teaching material. Selected works have been performed in the U.S. and Europe and have been broadcast in the U.S. Professional performers include Robert Bloom, Paul von Schilhawsky, Melvin Kaplan, Richard Stoltzman, John Russo, Timothy Malosh, the Fine Arts String Quartet and others. Recently works have been performed in Chicago, Colorado Springs, Philadelphia, Southampton, England and the Charles Ives Center of American Music Festival held in New Milford, Connecticut.

ASCAP Awards have been received each of the last thirteen years, and she was named Composer of the Year 2000 by the Kansas Federation of Music Clubs. Wendelburg biographies are given in a list of biographical works including the Who's Who of American Music Classical, the International Who's Who in Music, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, 2000 Outstanding People of the 20th Century and many others.
