  • Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, premiered by Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax in May 1990
  • I Will Breathe a Mountain, a song cycle premiered at Carnegie Hall in its centennial season (1991) by Marilyn Horne and Martin Katz
  • the opera McTeague, written in collaboration with Arnold Weinstein and Robert Altman, premiered in October 1992 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago
  • Third Violin Sonata, premiered at the Aspen Music Festival in July 1993 by Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and William Bolcom
  • Lyric Concerto, a flute concerto premiered by James Galway and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in October 1993
  • Let Evening Come, a song cycle written in memory of Tatiana Troyanos and premiered by Benita Valente, Michael Tree, and Cynthia Raim in March 1994
  • Sonata for Two Pianos in One Movement, premiered by the Paratore Brothers in April 1994
  • Trio for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano premiered by The Verdehr Trio in April 1994
  • A Whitman Triptych, a song cycle written for Marilyn Horne and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, premiered in June 1995

  • Gaea, for two left-handed pianists and two chamber orchestras, premiered by Leon Fleisher and Gary Graffman with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, David Zinman conducting, in April 1996
  • Second Piano Quartet, premiered by the Beaux Arts Trio and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman at the Library of Congress in December 1996
  • Fourth Sonata, for violin and piano, premiered by Henry Rubin and William Bolcom in January 1997
  • Cabaret Songs, Vol. 3 & 4, written for mezzo-soprano Joan Morris in collaboration with Arnold Weinstein and premiered by Bolcom and Morris in December 1997
  • Sixth Symphony, premiered in February 1998 by Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra
  • Naumburg Cycle, seven songs written for baritone Stephen Salters, winner of the 1999 Walter W. Naumburg Foundation competition, was premiered by Salters at Alice Tully Hall/New York on April 29, 2002
  • Seventh Symphony: A Symphonic Concerto, was premiered by The Met Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, at Carnegie Hall / New York on May 19, 2002
  • Borborygm, an organ work based on sketches by the late William Albright, was premiered July 3, 2002, by Alan Morrison at the American Guild of Organists convention in Philadelphia

Upcoming Premieres Of New Works

  • Medusa, a monodrama for soprano and chamber orchestra, will be premiered March 5, 2003, in Evanston, Illinois, by soprano Catherine Malfitano and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. It will also be performed that month in Ann Arbor, Mich., Carnegie Hall / New York, Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach.

Performances

  • Bolcom performed his Fourth Violin Sonata and Graceful Ghost Rag with Malcolm Lowe, concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, on July 19, 2002, at Tanglewood, Lenox, Massachusetts. Sir James Galway also performed Bolcom's Lyric Concerto for Flute and Orchestra that same evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Galway repeated the work at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on July 25, 2002.
  • Bolcom's opera, A View from the Bridge (with libretto by Arthur Miller and Arnold Weinstein, based on Miller's play of the same name), will be performed seven times at The Metropolitan Opera / New York in December 2002. The Hagen Opera (Germany) will present the European premiere of the opera on February 8, 2003, with it running in repertory for a total of eight performances through May 2003. The Portland Opera (Oregon) will present four performances during the week of March 31-April 5, 2003.
  • Bolcom's Ragomania will be performed by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel in early January 2003.
  • The American Composers Festival, sponsored by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, will conclude with performances of Bolcom's Songs of Innocence and of Experience on February 5 & 6, 2003.

  • Re-issue on CD of Nonesuch Explorer Series album, Animals of Africa / Sounds of the Jungle, Plain & Bush, with liner notes by William Bolcom.

New Recordings

  • Bolcom's Concerto-Serenade, performed by the Miramar Sinfonietta, conducted by Henri B. Pensis, on Twentieth Century Contrasts - released on Albany Records Troy 509.
  • Song (for Band), performed by the University of Michigan Symphony Band, conducted by H. Robert Reynolds - released on Equilibrium EQ45.
  • Lyric Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, performed by flutist Amy Porter and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra - to be released on Equilibrium Records.
