Annual American Composers Update

Dan Locklair

SAI Friend of the Arts Dan Locklair is Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Music at Wake Forest Univ., Winston-Salem, NC. Aired in 1998-99 over Public Radio International were Three Christmas Motets, for SATB a cappella choir, on The First Art; Hues for Orchestra (excerpts), on Performance Today; Windows of Comfort, Organbook I, no. 5 (excerpts), on With Heart and Voice; and Ayre for the Dance, on Pipe Dreams. He has commissions for a flute, cello, and piano work from the North Carolina Arts Council; St. Peter's Rock, for SATB choir, trumpet, and organ, from St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Charlotte, NC; Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, for SATB choir, for the Montreal (Canada) Boys Choir; and a work for the Wake Forest Univ. wind ensemble. In 1999, master classes and concerts of his music occurred at Birmingham-Southern Coll., Alabama; and at AGO sessions in Birmingham (Jan.), New York, NY (Apr.); and Dallas, TX (Nov.). A Ricordi catalog (1999) of his music is available from Boosey & Hawke's (United States) and Ricordi (Canada). He is represented by Jeffrey James Arts Consulting.

Premieres

In High Point, NC, tenor Richard Heard and pianist Pamela Howland premiered From the Mountains (Three American Songs for high voice and piano), Mar. 1999. Sonata da chiesa, for flute and organ was played first at the AGO Region IV Convention by Robert Cronin and Andre Lash, June 1999 at the Knoxville (TN) Museum of Art. The Wake Forest Univ. Concert Choir, led by Brian Gorelick, presented Shepherds Rejoice (Two Christmas Anthems), Oct. 1999. On a Choral Art Society program, directed by Robert Russell, GLORIA, for SATB divisi choir, brass octet, and percussion, was introduced, Dec. 1999 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland, ME. En natus est Emanuel, a Christmas Motet for a cappella SSAATTBB choir and SA choir, was sung first by the Bel Canto Company and the Greensboro (NC) Youth Chorus, Ann Doyle, director, Dec. 1999.

Performances

The St. Louis (MO) Orchestra, under Bruce Hangen, presented Creation's Seeing Order (A Prelude for Orchestra), Mar. 1999. In Feb. 1999, Nancy Cooper and Robert Ledbetter performed Constellations (A Concerto for Organ and Percussion), at the University of Montana, in Missoula. 1999 performances of Brief Mass, for SSAATTBB a cappella choir, occurred with St. Paul's Houston Choir, in Thomaskirche, Leipzig, Germany (July); with the Washington (DC) Master Chorale Chamber Singers, led by Donald McCullough, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (Nov.); and with the Christ Church Cathedral Singers, Patrick Wedd, director, in Montreal, Canada (Jan.). In 1999, Windows of Comfort (Two Organbooks) was heard with Marie Rubis Bauer at the AGO Region VI Convention, in Omaha, NE (June); and with Marilyn Keiser (selections) at Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL (Jan.). In June 1999, Rubrics (A Liturgical Suite for Organ) was played by Michael Costello at the Knoxville (TN) AGO convention, and by Susan Bates (movement 5) at the Church of St. Peter, Rome, Italy.
