Annual American Composers Update

James Mobberley

James Mobberley, of Liberty, MO, recently named Curators Professor of Music at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music, continues as Composer-in-Residence with the New Ear Ensemble, in Kansas City. For fall semester 1998, he served as Visiting Adjunct Professor of Composition at Indiana Univ. He was Worldwide Honor Composer at the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Composers Workshop and Resident Composer at the Bennington (VT) Chamber Music Conference and Composers Forum of the East. Currently, he has been working on a work for bass clarinet, saxophone, cello, percussion, and piano, to premiere with the New Ear Ensemble, Mar. 23, 2000; and a percussion-quartet piece to premiere with musicians of the Merit Music Project, Apr. 2000 in Chicago, IL.

Premieres

Works written for and played first at the Composers Forum of the East were Two Studies in Perpetual Motion, for flute/alto flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, cello, and piano; and Elegy for Littleton, Colorado, for clarinet, violin, and cello. In St. Louis, MO, a Metro Theater Company production included the premiere of Music for ICEMAN, Jan. 21-22, 2000, followed by shows in Vidalia, GA, Jan. 25; Charlotte, NC, Jan. 28; and St. Louis, Feb. 3-4.

Performances

1999 performances of Caution to the Winds, for piano and electronic tape, occurred with Anthony De Mare at the Ultima Festival, Oct. 4 in Oslo, Norway; and with Audrey Andrist on the CBC Galleria Concert Series, May 7 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Choreographed by Todd Bolender, the State Ballet of Missouri danced to Arena (ballet for orchestra), with the Kansas City Symphony, Oct. 2-10 and 26, 1999.
