Annual American Composers Update
Samuel Jones
Samuel Jones, of suburban Seattle, WA, is serving for
his third year as Composer in Residence for the Seattle
Symphony Orchestra. After suffering a heart attack in
Apr. 1999, he has recovered and has resumed his regular
compositional schedule.
Premieres
ROUNDINGS: Musings and Meditations on Texas New Deal
Murals, commissioned by the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra,
James Setapen, Music Director, for the orchestra's 75th
anniversary, is a symphonic suite for large orchestra,
one movement of which will be premiered on each of the
group's major 1999-2000 concerts, with the complete suite
presented on the last concert of the season, Apr. 8, 2000.
Performances
The Seattle (WA) Symphony, conducted by Gerard Schwarz,
gave a performance of
Overture for a City, Sept.
18-19, 1999. In 1999, the Cascade Symphony, under Gregory
Isaacs, played
Symphony No. 1 in Edmonds, WA, Oct.
26, and in Seattle, Oct. 27.
Janus was heard with
the Richmond (VA) Symphony, Barbara Yahr conducting, Nov.
20 and 22, 1999. The 1999 schedule of the Rainer (WA)
Philharmonic, led by Paul Mori, included
Listen Now,
My Children in Des Moines, WA, May 15, and in Tukwila,
WA, May 16. Under the baton of Anthony Spain, the Bath
(England) Philharmonic is scheduled to present
Elegy,
Feb. 12, 2000.
