Annual American Composers Update
Gay Holmes Spears
Gay Holmes Spears** recently has completed
Sonata for Horn and Piano; Arthropods, for piano;
Five Pieces for Piano, and Piano Sonata.
In May 2000, Spears moved to the St. Louis, MO area,
where she is a free-lance composer/keyboardist, full-time
mom, and an active part of her church's music program.
Premieres
Psalm 92 for SATB choir, piano
and percussion, premiered at the First United Methodist
Church in Paragould, AR, Nov. 1999, with the Chancel
Choir directed by Danny Davis, and the composer at the
piano. Shining River, for four percussion and
piano, was introduced at the University of Tennessee
at Martin (UTM) by the UTM Percussion Ensemble, Nancy
Mathesen, director, Nov. 1999.
Performances
On Apr. 18, 2000, Phil Golson led the
University of South Carolina Chamber Winds in Tapestries.
Reflections on "Wondrous Love" was on the program
at a salute to American women composers and conductors,
called Women of the Pen and Podium, given by the Riverside
Winds, conducted by Anne Hendrickson, in Corona, CA,
Nov. 1999.
