Annual American Composers Update
Gardner Read
John McDonald, pianist and professor
of music at Tufts University, will record a CD of Gardner
Read's piano music including
Driftwood Suite, Dance
of the Locomotives, Sonata da Chiesa, Touch Piece,
and
Piano Quintet, the last along with the Lydian
String Quartet of Brandeis Univ. Read's tenth book,
Orchestral Combinations: The Science and Art of Instrumental
Tone-Color, will be published in 2001 by
W.
W. Norton Co.
Performances
On Aug. 17, 2000, harpsichordist Mark
Kroll played Fantasy-Toccata at Radovljica Manor,
in Ljubjiani, Slovenia. McDonald presented Touch
Piece at the Franz Liszt Academy, in Budapest, Hungary,
Aug. 25, 2000. An Onondaga (NY) Community College program,
Apr. 2, 1999, included Los Dioses Aztecas, with
the Onondaga Percussion Ensemble. In 2000, Five Aphorisms,
for violin and piano, was heard with Dawn Perlner and
Victoria Gomez at M. I. T., in Cambridge, MA, Apr. 24;
and with Andrew Carlson and Nelson Harper at Dennison
University, in Granville, OH, Sept. 22; at the University
of Iowa, in Iowa City; at the University of Georgia,
in Athens, Sept. 26; and at Furman University, in Greenville,
SC, Sept. 27.
