Annual American Composers Update

Glenn Spring

Glenn Spring wrote all the works mentioned below during a sabbatical year (July 1999-Aug. 2000) spent in Denver, CO. In addition, Spring composed Trifles, suite music for harpsichord (or organ or piano), which led to the version listed in Performances.

Premieres

Letter to the World: Reflections on Poems of Emily Dickinson, a l0-minute work for horns, timpani, organ, strings, and narrator, commissioned by Walla Walla College to honor three retiring professors, premiered on Apr. 29, 2000 with the composer conducting. Then said Abraham, a meditation for viola and organ, was first performed July 15, 2000 at the Denver South SDA Church, with Spring and Kevin Worth. On Nov. 9, 2000, Trifles, adapted for string orchestra from the harpsichord suite, will be presented, Nov. 9, 2000 by the Cantabile Youth Orchestra.

Performances

Commissioned by cellist/storyteller Carol Tarr, The Bremen Town Musicians, a setting of the tale by the Brothers Grimm, was performed at the Harmony Library by Fort Collins children's librarian Giny McConathy and the composer, July 8, 2000.
