Annual American Composers Update

John H. Corina

John H. Corina has returned to teaching composition part-time at the University of Georgia for 2000-01 as Professor Emeritus of Music. He is also associate conductor of the Athens (GA) Choral Society.

Premieres

On Jan. 14, 2000, A Simms Diptych, for soprano, oboe, violin and piano with wind chimes, was heard first, with Ellen Ritchey soprano; Corina, oboe; Susan Johnson, violin; and Margaret Strahl, piano, at the William Gilmore Simms Gala in Charleston, SC. The Feb. 17, 2001 NACWAPI Symposium, held at the University of Kansas, featured Bruce Gbur in the premiere of Divertimento for Bassoon and Piano.

Performances

On Dec. 12, 1999, Suite of Carols, for SATB choir and vibraphone, received a performance from the Western Carolina Community Chorus, James E. Dooley, director, and Mario Gaetano at Western Carolina University and at the First United Methodist Church, in Waynesville, NC. In 2000, Sonet, for contrabassoon and string orchestra, was heard with Susan L. Nigro and The Rome (Italy) Festival Orchestra, Kevin McMahon, conductor, July 22, and with Richard Plaster and the Concord Hill Chamber Orchestra, Willis Traphagan, conductor, at the First Parish Church, in Lexington, MA, Aug. 18; and in a contrabassoon-piano version, with Nigro and Mark K. Lindblad, at the Arlington Heights (IL) Memorial Library, Feb. 13, and with Monica Fucci and Luis Semeniuk at the International Double Reed Society Conference, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Aug. 11. William Davis, bassoon, and Jolene Davis, organ, played Four Sonatinas at the Southeastern Composers League Forum, Apr. 11, 2000 at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. A faculty recital at the University of Georgia Reed Trio included Woodwind Trio (in one movement), for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, Sept. 18, 2000 in Athens. At various dates, anthems have been performed at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, in Athens, with Deborah Henson, organist/director of Music; The United Church of Christ, in Medina, OH, with Janet Welch, soloist; at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, in Arlington, TX, with Linton Powell, organist, and Kathy Powell, choir director; at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Alexandria, VA, with Corrine Berkseth, soprano, and Andy Harwood, clarinet; at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Medina, OH, with Mark Heiskanen, organist; and at Blessed Sacrament Church, in Charleston, SC.
