Annual American Composers Update

Jack Gallagher

In 1999, SAI National Arts Associate Jack Gallagher was the Featured Guest Composer at the 37th Annual Contemporary Music Festival at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, where 12 of his works were performed. During the event, coordinated by Professor Phillip Schroeder, he gave a public presentation, met with classes and ensembles, and guest-conducted his Stanfare, for eight trumpets and timpani. Recently completed is an encore piece entitled Malambo-Hommage, commissioned by pianist Carson Cooman. Broadcasts of his work include the Vienna Modern Masters CD recordings of Berceuse by the Polish TV and Radio Symphony Orchestra of Krakow, Szymon Kawalla, conductor, over WCLV-FM in Cleveland, OH; WGDR-FM in Plainfield, VT; and KTPB-FM in Kilgore, TX; and The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam: Brian Israel) by the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra, Tsanko Delibozov, conductor, over WOMR-FM in Provincetown, MA; WFSQ-FM in Tallahassee, FL; and WCLV-FM in Cleveland. WCLV-FM also aired CD recordings of the Air Force Band of Flight, Richard Shelton, conductor, performing Proteus Rising from the Sea and the VMM CD of Symphony in One Movement: Threnody by the Koszalin Philharmonic, Kawalla, conductor. Many of Gallagher's works are in production with Editions Bim.

Performances

The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam: Brian Israel) had performances with wind ensembles of Sam Houston State University, Matthew McInturf, conductor, in Huntsville, TX, Dec. 1998 and Apr. 1999; SUNY College at Potsdam, Timothy Topolewski, conductor, Mar. 2000; Roy C. Ketcham High School, Mar. 2000; and the College Band Directors National Association Eastern Conference, at Yale University, Apr. 2000. Under Nicholas Perrini, the Capital University/Bexley Community Orchestra played A Quiet Musicke at Capital University, in Columbus, OH, Apr. 1999. Exotic Dances, for violin and piano, was heard with Nancy and Eugene Gaub at the Mid-America Composers Festival and Society of Composers, Inc. Region V Conference, in Grinnell, IA, Oct. 1999; Augustana College, Moline, IL, Oct. 1999; Roosevelt University, Chicago, IL, Oct. 1999; Grinnell College, Nov. 1999; Blanden Memorial Art Museum, Fort Dodge, IA, Nov. 1999; and St. Paul's Cathedral Noon Concert Series, Des Moines, IA, with a broadcast on WOI-FM, Nov. 1999; and with Amy Glick and Pamela Yarnell at The College of Wooster (OH), Apr. 2000. A Psalm of Life was presented by wind ensembles at Sam Houston State University, Donald Ryder, conductor, Apr. 1999; Franklin and Marshall College, Brian Norcross, conductor, Lancaster, PA, Nov. 1999; and The College of Wooster, Nancy Ditmer, conductor, at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference, in Cleveland, Jan. 2000, at the Tri-County Honors Band Festival, in Wooster, Feb. and Mar. 2000, and then on tour of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri, Mar. 2000. 2000 performances of Variations for Cello and Piano occurred with Heidi Albert and James Howsmon at the Baldwin-Wallace College-Conservatory of Music, Jan. 2000; and by Albert and Yarnell at The College of Wooster, Apr. 2000.
