Annual American Composers Update
Jared Spears
SAI National Arts Associate Jared Spears
has moved to the St. Louis, MO area where he composes
and travels extensively as guest conductor, adjudicator,
and lecturer. He continues to receive consecutive ASCAP
awards.
Premieres
On Dec. 18, 1999, The Freedom Chronicles,
for symphonic band, premiered at the Midwest International
Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, IL, with the U.S.
Army Band "Pershing's Own", Col. L. Bryan Shelburne,
Jr., conductor. The Drums of Blackhawk, for symphonic
band, was heard first at the McHenry County 2000 Celebration
in Crystal Lake, IL, with the McHenry County Honor Band,
Spears, guest conductor, Jan. 2000. At the 34th Annual
Commissioned Composer Concert at the University of Wisconsin
- River Falls, Legacy: A Concerto for Three Percussion
and Wind Ensemble, was introduced by Michael Cain,
Kami Miller, and Jeffrey Lambert, and the school's Symphonic
Wind Ensemble, Kristin Tjornehoj, director. The Dream
Chasers, for symphonic band, received its first
performance at the Central Division Music Educators
Association's Senior High School Honors Band Concert
Clinic and Concert in Waynesville, MO, with Spears as
the guest conductor, Nov. 4, 2000. All premieres were
commissioned by the performing organizations.
Performances
In 2000, The Freedom Chronicles
was presented by the Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Wind Ensemble, with Spears guest conducting, Feb. 12;
and with the St. Louis Winds, Dan Presgrave, conductor,
at the St. Louis Art Museum, Oct. 22. Calvin Hofer led
the Mesa State University Wind Symphony in For the
Courageous in Grand Junction, CO, Mar. 3, 2000.
Wind Dancer was played by the Symphonic Band
of Ball State University, under Christian Zembower,
in Muncie, IN, Apr. 26, 2000.
