Annual American Composers Update
Randall Snyder
Randall Snyder is Composer-In-Residence
at the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln. Kendall/Hunt
has published the third edition of his Outline History
of Rock & Roll.
Premieres
The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra presented
Le Sacre du Big Red and Nebraska City Breakdown.
In Omaha, soloist Fred Hemke and the Omaha Symphony
premiered the Alto Saxophone Concerto. Saxophonist
Larry Gwozdz soloed with the Oskaloosa Symphony in the
premiere of Fin de Siecle. James Pellerite and
the Cascade Symphony of Seattle introduced the orchestral
version of Journeys. At the Simon Bolivar ampitheater
in Mexico City, Karen Becker and pianist Theresa Bogard
gave the first performance of Autumn Pieces.
Fictions, for 12 instruments, was played first
at St. Stephan's Church in New York, NY, on Jan 7, 2001,
by the North/South Consonance, Max Lifschitz, conductor.
Heard first at the University of Nebraska were Amber
Changes and Sphere, in a concert featuring
Snyder's music, with the University of Nebraska Jazz
Ensemble, led by Gene Smith; Requiem Sonnets,
with the University of Nebraska Singers and a trombone
quartet, under Peter Eklund; and Beatlemania!,
with the University of Nebraska Trombone Octet, directed
by Scott Anderson.
Performances
The Clinton/Narboni piano duo along
with percussionists Richard Brown and Doug Smith presented
Portals at the San Antonio Chamber Music Festival.
At recitals at the University of Nebraska, tubist Craig
Fuller played Sandepiece, accompanied by the
composer on piano, and trombonist Scott Anderson played
Fantasy 1970, with Michael Cotton, piano. Dutch
saxophonist William Raaijman and the Zephrus String
Quartet will play Quintet 1971 in a tour of the
United States. The Inoue Chamber Ensemble along with
a Shadow Puppet Theater presented the Bamboo Princess
at Sunbridge College, in New York.
