Annual American Composers Update
Jonathan Elkus
SAI National Arts Associate Jonathan Elkus works in Davis,
CA, as Director of Bands at the University of California,
Davis, and as the proprietor of Overland Music Distributors.
His concert-band transcription of Charles Ives' Second
Symphony, fourth movement was introduced July 12,
2001, in Bern, Switzerland, with the U.S. Marine Band
under Col. Timothy W. Foley. At Carnegie Hall, the Nashville
Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Schermerhorn,
gave the first New York performance of Elkus's critical
edition of Ives' Second Symphony, September 25,
2000. Albany Records has released his concert-band transcription
of Ives' The Alcotts, with the New England Conservatory
Wind Ensemble, Frank L. Battisti conducting.
