Annual American Composers Update
Kari Henrik Juusela
In addition to his work as Associate Dean and Director
of Composition at the Stetson University School of Music,
in Deland, FL, Kari Henrik Juusela presented a number
of concerts featuring his music with Indian santur virtuoso
Nandkishor Muley and computer musician/vocalist/composer
Panaiotis. The trio presented concerts in central Florida,
sponsored by the Asian Cultural Association during the
spring of 2001 at Rollins College, Stetson University,
Florida Technical University, and the Maitland Arts
Center. Also during spring 2001, he was an Associate
Artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts during a
residency with Leo Wadada Smith.
Premieres
On May 15, 2001, Juusela premiered Lamentations,
for solo cello, at an SAI Musicale at Our Lady of Hope
Church, Port Orange, FL. Heard first in 2001 at Stetson
University were Chasing Karma, for violin and
cello, with Beth Newdome and David Bjella, April 10;
and Sato, for solo viola, with Jesus Alfonzo,
August 24. Cellobration, a festival of cello music directed
by Bjella, to be held in Orlando, FL, will introduce
its commissioned work Premonitions, for 12 cellos,
March 17, 2002.
Performances
Anandkari, a concerto for chamber orchestra,
santur, Indian flutes, and cello, had a performance
at Florida Technical University, in Melbourne, with
the Stetson University Chamber Orchestra, Anthony Hose,
conductor, Nandkishor Moley, V. K. Raman, and Juusela,
April 24, 2001. On April 10, 2001, an SCI Composers
Concert held at Stetson University featured Crossing
Twilight, for computer-generated tape.
