Annual American Composers Update

Katherine Hoover**

Parnassus Recordings has issued its Kokopeli CD, featuring Katherine Hoover as flutist and composer, with music by Pleyel, Mozart, J. C. Bach, Bizet, and Berlioz, as well as her own works (see Recordings). She was a featured part of the California Summer Arts program, giving three days of master classes and preparing her Kyrie for performance. At Kean College, in New Jersey, she was a guest of the Ars Vitalis series. The Seattle Times called her String Quartet "a very visual piece filled with drama and originality . . . gorgeous."

Premieres

The 2001 National Flute Convention included premieres of Mariposas, with the Texas Woman's University and Brookhaven College Flute Choir, directed by Pamela Youngblood, August 16; and Celebration, with the massed flutists in honor of Joseph Mariano's 90th birthday, August 18.

Performances

In 2001, programs in New York, NY, included Hoover's Double Concerto for two violins and string orchestra, in Carnegie Hall, with Pamela Frank, Andre Simonescu, and the Orchestra of the New York Festival of Strings, led by Jaime Laredo, December 28; and Homage to Bartok, for wind quintet, in Weill Recital Hall, with The Sylvan Winds, May 9. Heard during her guest appearance at Kean College were Medieval Suite and Kokopeli, with flutist Kim Reisinger and pianist Matthew Halper. The Colorado Quartet continued to perform Hoover's String Quartet. Many other performances have occurred throughout the United States including Canyon Echos in Illinois, and Winter Spirits in Connecticut.
