Annual American Composers Update
Katherine Hoover**
Parnassus Recordings has issued its Kokopeli
CD, featuring Katherine Hoover as flutist and composer,
with music by Pleyel, Mozart, J. C. Bach, Bizet, and
Berlioz, as well as her own works (see Recordings).
She was a featured part of the California Summer Arts
program, giving three days of master classes and preparing
her Kyrie for performance. At Kean College, in
New Jersey, she was a guest of the Ars Vitalis series.
The Seattle Times called her String Quartet "a
very visual piece filled with drama and originality
. . . gorgeous."
Premieres
The 2001 National Flute Convention included premieres
of Mariposas, with the Texas Woman's University
and Brookhaven College Flute Choir, directed by Pamela
Youngblood, August 16; and Celebration, with
the massed flutists in honor of Joseph Mariano's 90th
birthday, August 18.
Performances
In 2001, programs in New York, NY, included Hoover's
Double Concerto for two violins and string orchestra,
in Carnegie Hall, with Pamela Frank, Andre Simonescu,
and the Orchestra of the New York Festival of Strings,
led by Jaime Laredo, December 28; and Homage to Bartok,
for wind quintet, in Weill Recital Hall, with The Sylvan
Winds, May 9. Heard during her guest appearance at Kean
College were Medieval Suite and Kokopeli,
with flutist Kim Reisinger and pianist Matthew Halper.
The Colorado Quartet continued to perform Hoover's String
Quartet. Many other performances have occurred throughout
the United States including Canyon Echos in Illinois,
and Winter Spirits in Connecticut.
