Annual American Composers Update

Kent Kennan

On May 19, 2001, Kent Kennan received the Doty Award, honoring E. W. Doty, the founding and long-time Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Chairman of the (then) Music Department, given annually "in recognition of outstanding leadership and extraordinary contributions to the College of Fine Arts," at the University of Texas at Austin. In presenting the award, Dean Robert Freeman mentioned Kennan's long service to the University's School of Music as teacher (for over 40 years), Acting Chairman for a year, Graduate Adviser for six, and provider of an endowed graduate fellowship in composition or theory. Also cited were Kennan's compositions, recordings, and his two widely-used books, on orchestration and counterpoint, respectively. An RCA Music Group recording includes his clarinet/orchestra transcription of Prokofieff Sonata Op. 94 for flute or violin and piano, performed by Richard Stoltzman and the Warsaw Philharmonic directed by Lawrence Leighton Smith. In 2002, Prentice Hall is releasing the sixth edition of The Technique of Orchestration, co-authored with Donald Grantham.
