Robert Fleisher
Robert Fleisher, professor and coordinator
of music theory and composition at Northern Illinois
University, earned his Bachelor of Music degree with
honors at the University of Colorado and his Master
of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees at the
University of Illinois. His writings have appeared
in the Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute,
Notes, Sonus, Musica Domani (Milan), Music
and Audiophile (Taiwan), and the Middle East
Journal; and his book Twenty Israeli Composers:
Voices of a Culture was published in 1997 by the
Wayne State University Press. His compositions have
been performed, broadcast, and exhibited in the United
States and abroad. He is the recipient of grants from
the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National
Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Ruttenberg Arts
Foundation, and the Illinois Arts Council; and of
resident fellowships at centers for artists and scholars
in Israel and the United States.
Premieres
As part of the Society of Composers
Region VIII Conference, held in October 2000 at Marylhurst
(OR) University, On Your Mark (1999), for solo
trumpet, was premiered. Billabongs (2000),
for two pianos, had its first performance at Northern
Illinois University, in DeKalb, March 2001.
Performances
The Society of Composers Region VII
conference, held at the California Institute of the
Arts, January 2000, included Quintet (1972),
for flute, violin, piano, cello, and vibraphone. In
September 1999, Two Movements for Solo Violoncello
(1972/97), was heard at Pomona College, California
State University at Northridge, the University of
Southern California, and the University of Central
Oklahoma. Performances at Northern Illinois University
included Secrets (1974), for solo trumpet,
April 2000; and Meditations for soprano saxophone
and trumpet, April 2001.
