Annual American Composers Update
M. William Karlins
Premieres
At the Block Museum of Art, in Evanston, IL, Humble
Harvest, by SAI National Arts Associate M. William
Karlins, was played first by pianist Ursula Oppens at
The Second Northwestern University Music Marathon, in
Evanston, IL, May 27, 2001, and again on May 29, 2001.
Mallory Thompson led the Northwestern University Symphonic
Wind Ensemble in the premiere of Academic Festival
Fanfare, May 18, 2001, at Pick Staiger Concert Hall,
in Evanston. In Winnetka, IL, the Music Institute of
Chicago program Music For A While: The Music of M. William
Karlins, in honor of the composer's 69th birthday, included
the first performance of children's works Four Piano,
for piano four hands, and Children's Pieces (six
pieces), with pianists Sarah Santos and Zachary Blumenfeld,
February 25, 2001.
Performances
The birthday concert also included Suite of Preludes
and Outgrowths-Variations, with pianist Abraham
Stokman; Quartet for Strings, with soprano in
the last movement, with Desiree Ruhstrat, Sang Mee Lee,
Frank Babbitt, David Cunliffe, and soprano Katharina
Rössner; and Song for Soprano with alto
flute and cello, with Rössner, Monty Adams, and
Cunliffe. Athanasios Zervas soloed in Quintet,
for alto saxophone and string quartet, at the Nakas
Conservatory, in Athens, Greece, February 12, 2001.
At the Contemporary Music VIII, at Northwestern University,
April 30, 2001, Quartet for Strings was performed
by the Pacifica String Quartet with soprano Rössner,
and Song for Soprano by Rössner, Caroline
Pittman, and Brandon Vamos. Pianist Salvatore Spina
played Outgrowths-Variations at the Franz Liszt
Academy of Music, in Budapest, Hungary, and at the Theatersaal
der Stadtinitiative, in Vienna, Austria, May 14, 2001.
Cheryl Jackling led the Indiana State University Saxophone
Ensemble in Nostalgie, for 12 saxophones, April
12, 2001 in Terre Haute.
