The 2003 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 95, Number 2 Jan BachJan Bach has been retired from Northern Illinois University, in DeKalb, since the summer of 1998 but continues to teach a class in orchestration or counterpoint each semester. He was included in the new Grove Dictionary, both the print and on-line editions. PremieresHeard first at Northern Illinois University was Dear God (children's letters to God), with The Cantate Children's Chorus of Palos Park, IL, conducted by Penny Wright, March 22, 2001. The South Bend Chamber Singers, led by Nancy Menk, introduced Songs of the Streetwise, March 25, 2001, in Notre Dame, IN. Music for a Low Budget Epic, for piccolo and bassoon, premiered at the National Flute Association Convention, held August 18, 2001, in Dallas, TX, with Kareen Britt and Micah Stanley. PerformancesAfter soloing in Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra with the Chicago Sinfonietta, under Paul Freeman, at the Kennedy Center, in Washington, DC, April 24, 2001, Liam Teague continued playing the work in 2002 with the Elmhurst (IL) Symphony Orchestra, under Stephen Alltop, February 9; and with the Fox Valley (WI) Symphony Orchestra, under Brian Groner, April 6. Esteddfod was heard with The Debussy Trio, July 24, 2001, in Los Osos, CA. The Pacific Rim Choral Festival included The Duel, based on The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, with the Red Rose Children's Choir of Libertyville, IL, Sharon Augsburger directing, July 2001 in Hawaii. On February 16, 2002, the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alltop, presented Variations on a Theme of Brahms. In 2002, Concerto for Euphonium and Orchestra had performances at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL (euphonium-piano version), with Anders Harstadhangen, March 3; and with Katsushi Ushiwata and the Sinfonia Orchestra of the North Shore, led by Clyde Mitchell, in Vancouver, BC, March 7.
