Jackson Hill
In summer 2002, Jackson Hill, Professor of Music
at Bucknell University, served as guest composer at Bridgewater
Hall in Manchester, England, and at the International Handel Festival
in Halle, Germany (June). The vocal ensemble Chanticleer has commissioned
a new work, In Winter's Keeping, for its 25th-anniversary season.
He also has received commissions from two English groups:
the Lichfield Cathedral choir, in Staffordshire, and the Fitzwilliam
String Quartet.
Premieres
On February 21, 2002, Long Hidden Deep
In Winter's Keeping, for mezzo-soprano
and string quartet, was presented at Bucknell
University by Martha Gibbs
Hill and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet.
In 2002, Hikyoku, for solo
flute, had its first performances with John McMurtery
at Bucknell University, March 7, and at
a Chromatic Art Society concert at Christ and St. Stephen's Church
in New York, NY, November 25; and with Alexandra Sopp at the Juilliard School of Music (the New York premiere)
on Nov 22, and at the Whynote Festival in
Dijon, France, November 28. Philomel,
for solo voice, alto recorder, cello, and harpsichord, was heard first
in 2002, at Bridgewater Hall, May 11, and at the International Handel
Festival (June).
Performances
In 2002, Chanticleer toured with Voices of Autumn,
for SATB choir, in Ohio,
Pennsylvania, California,
Virginia, Georgia,
North Carolina, Minnesota,
Alabama, and Mexico.
Three Motets was sung
by the choir of Corpus Christi Church,
New York, NY, March
27, 2002. Tango-no-tango,
for piano, was played by Louise Bessette
in a recital broadcast in Geneva, Switzerland, on the radio service
Espcace 2 (October).
