Robert Washburn**

SAI Friend of the Arts Robert Washburn has received another consecutive ASCAP award.  His recent text publications include the "World Music" portion of Crossroads in Music (Schirmer Books), a music-appreciation text for college liberal-arts students, and an entry, "The Blues in Africa," to be published in An Encyclopedia of the Blues (Rutledge Publications).  Besides writing about world music, he also has given presentations of African music at various colleges.  According to the ASCAP foreign performance report, his works have been heard in England, Germany, Austria, and Japan, as well as in many domestic programs.  He continues as Dean Emeritus and Senior Fellow in Music at the Crane School of Music, SUNY College at Potsdam.  In preparation for publishing is Washburn's William Billings Suite, for string orchestra.


Performances

Jack Stamp conducted Symphony for Band at Ball State School of Music.  At Avery Fisher Hall, in Lincoln Center, the Westchester Youth Symphony, under Victor Lionti, played Excursion for Orchestra.  The Lake Placid Sinfonietta, conducted by Alfred Gershfield, performed Adirondack Sketches.  A University of Oklahoma program included Concertino for Wind and Brass Quintets, David Campo, conductor.  With the composer conducting, the Syracuse Symphony presented Elegy.
