Samuel Jones
Samuel Jones, who is serving for his sixth year as
Composer-in-Residence of the Seattle (WA) Symphony, was a faculty
member of the Conductors Institute of South Carolina in June 2002. In September 2002, the Seattle Symphony gave
him its Artistic Achievement Award, previously won by Stephen Albert,
Alan Hovhaness, and David Diamond. His next commissions are for the Seattle Symphony
and for individual members of the orchestra.
Premieres
The revised version of A Symphonic Requiem (Variations
on a Theme of Howard Hanson) was given its first performances
October 3, 4, and 6, 2002, by the Seattle Symphony, under Gerard Schwarz.
Performances
Narrated by David Koch, Eudora's Fable: The Shoe Bird had performances April
3 and 6, 2002, with the Seattle Symphony, Alastair
Willis conducting, the Northwest Boychoir,
and the Columbia Choirs. Trevor
Kirk led the Knoxville (TN) Symphony in Symphony No. 3 (Palo
Duro
Canyon),
May 16-17, 2001. In Venice, Italy,
June 16 and 19, 2002, L'Offerta Musicale
di Venezia, under James Setapen, presented Elegy for String Orchestra. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was played
by the Bowling Green (KY) Western Symphony Orchestra, Jooyong
Ahn, conductor, September 19, 2002.
