Daniel J. Bukvich ***

National Arts Associate Daniel J. Bukvich, Professor of Music at the Lionel Hampton School of Music, University of Idaho in Moscow, ID, teaches music theory, ear training, jazz theory, and composition. An accomplished percussionist, he also teaches private students in percussion and directs a variety of ensembles at the University of Idaho. His creative approaches to percussion instrument design and construction; jazz drumming and solo percussion; and materials for music theory, sight-singing, and percussion instruction have made him a popular clinician and guest lecturer for concerts and workshops. Widely recognized across the country for his contributions to contemporary wind-band literature, Bukvich has also written and arranged an extensive amount of choral music and is in demand throughout the country as a guest conductor for both choral and instrumental ensembles. Premieres

Night Poem was performed by the All-State Jazz Band in February 2003 at the New Hampshire All-State Music Educators Convention. Concerto for Viola and Orchestra was premiered March 1 by violist Jennifer Smith and the Great Falls (MT) Symphony Orchestra, directed by Gordon Johnson. The work is dedicated to the memory of Mary Clement Sanks, violist, professor of viola, piano, music theory, and ear training at the University of Utah and Montana State University. In April, the Foxborough (MA) High School Band, under the direction of Steve Massey, presented the first performance of Celebrate/Celebration in Symphony Hall, Boston, MA. The Haunted Mime, written for the John F. Kennedy Middle School Band in Enfield, CT, was premiered under the direction of John Power at the All-Eastern Music Educators Conference.

The Bolero Factory, opera for narrators, soloists, and percussion orchestra; Eight Primes, percussion ensemble; March of the Children's Guard, concert band; A Percussion Odyssey, theatre piece for three percussionists; Three Phrases from Yugoslav Folk Songs for Concert Band; Sonata for Timpani; all published in 2003.
