The 2004 American Composers Update

as published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2

Edmund Cionek

In September 2003, Edmund Cionek was appointed a Resident Artist with the Mabou Mines Theatre Company, NY, where he will develop a new multi-media work based on the poetry of Walt Whitman. In July 2003, Cionek curated the New Composers Concert at the 2003 Bar Harbor (ME) Musical Festival featuring a recital of new music by guitarist Bryce Dessner.

Premieres

Three new works were heard in April 2003, during the Tribeca (NY) New Music Festival, at the Flea Theatre: At The Art Gallery for SSAA a cappella and slides (inspired by Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon): Klee's A Fantasy Opera Scene, Duchamp's From the White Box, and anon. Young Elvis on velvet.

Performances

Cionek co-wrote, arranged, and orchestrated the musical revue Steakin', which opened off-Broadway in April 2003. Cionek's Tri-Sci-Fi: A Chillogy (which includes his opera SPACE: an Opera in Capsule Form) was produced by the downtown, avant-garde Fringe NYC, the New York International Fringe Festival and Adair Productions in August 2003. The Village Voice said "an authentically bizarre musical," and NY Theatre called the work "Dada-esque."
