The 2004 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2 Katherine Hoover *On November 10, 2002, Requiem: A Service of Remembrance 1865/2001, with poetry by Walt Whitman, was premiered at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, at the Citicorp Building (Lexington Ave. and 54th St.) in New York, NY. Writing of the compositional process, Ms. Hoover remarked, "Last March, I began a project which has since taken over my musical life. I wanted, as have many others, to make some sort of musical statement about the events of 9/11 that affected us all so deeply. A friend . . . suggested some work by Walt Whitman; I was stunned by the relevance of his words, and began writing. The piece found a performance even before it was complete, when I showed some of it to Tom Schmidt at St. Peter's. I am honored to have my work presented by this wonderful church, which is known for its fine music. . ." PremieresEcho for SATB chorus was premiered May 29, 2003, by the New Amsterdam Singers, under the direction of Clara Longstreth, at Merkin Concert Hall in New York, NY.
