The 2004 American Composers Update

Samuel Adler ***

SAI National Arts Associate Samuel Adler celebrated his 75th birthday in 2003 for which there were many concerts, including those given at the Juilliard School, the Eastman School, Tanglewood, and the University of Texas. Adler has been invited to be a scholar at the American Academy in Berlin, May-June 2004.

Premieres

April 6-8, 2003, Concerto for Viola (Clarinet) and Orchestra (based on Sonata op.120 #1 by Johannes Brahms), as orchestrated by Adler, was performed by Randolph Kelly and the Pittsburgh Symphony, conducted by Klaus Peter Flor. Organist Karel Paukert presented In Praise of Bach at the Cleveland (OH) AGO Convention, on June 23, 2003. Beyond the Pale for Clarinet and String Orchestra was performed by Gilad Havel with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, on July 16, in New York, NY. On November 10, the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz presented The Challenge of the Muse, for Tenor, Soprano, and Orchestra. The first performance of Recalling the Yesterdays (mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble) is scheduled to be presented by Voices of Change on March 6, 2004, in Dallas, TX.

Performances

Violist Rebecca Albers, with The Juilliard Orchestra under the direction of Larry Rachleff, presented Adler's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. Four Composers Portraits for Piano Solo was heard in a performance by Laura Melton on April 9, 2003, in Toledo, OH, and broadcast on NPR Stations. On April 14, Music for II was performed by the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Marc Satherday. Show An Affirming Flame was presented May 23 by the Young Musicians Debut Orchestra, conducted by Nick Strimple in Los Angeles, CA. Peter Wilson led the Columbus Symphony in American Air and Dances on October 19.
