In 2003, SAI Friend of the Arts Walter S. Hartley received his 42nd annual ASCAP Serious Music Award.

Premieres

Suite No. 2 for saxophone quartet (2003) was introduced at Fredonia, NY, April 10, 2003. Alex Safford led the Orchard Park (NY) High School Concert Orchestra in the March 19 premiere of Present Joys for orchestra (2002). Concerto Grosso for wind quintet and band (2002) was presented by the Fredonia Wind Quintet and Wind Ensemble, SUNY-Fredonia, April 13. These works received their U.S. premieres in 2003: Sonatina (2003) for alto saxophone and piano (2003), David Wright and Lucy Mauro, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C., February 22; Lyric Suite (1993), Paul Cohen, tenor sax, Richard Clark, viola, and Lucy Anderson, piano, Merkin Concert Hall, New York, NY, February 25; Trio Miniatures (2003), David Wright, alto saxophone, Charles Gray, baritone saxophone, Lucy Mauro, piano, West Virginia University, April 10.

Performances

Double Concerto (1969) was presented April 23, 2003, by David Parks, alto sax, Charles Page, tuba, and the USM Wind Ensemble conducted by Gary Adam, at the University of Southern Mississippi. A performance of Trio Estatico (1991) was heard at the Inter-American Music Festival, San Juan, Puerto Rico, on June 5 with John Moore, tenor saxophone, Patrick Meighan, alto saxophone, and pianist Jose Maurtua. Lyric Suite (1993) was presented July 10 at the World Saxophone Congess by Jackie Lamar, tenor sax, Karen Griebling, viola, and John Krebs, piano, Minneapolis, MN.
