The 2005 American Composers Update

Alice A. Moerk*

Alice Moerk was the recipient of several awards from the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW). At the 2004 National Convention in Washington, DC, she received awards for Tapestries (wind ensemble) and Variations on ‘Pastimes’ (piano). She also received a first place award from the NLAPW Song Competition in Clearwater, FL, for Little Babe, a carol for voice and piano.

Premieres

Elegy: All That is to Come was presented by cellist Lukasz Szyrner and pianist Li-Ly Chang at the NLAPW National Convention in April 2004, Washington, DC. On May 15, the composer premiered her organ work In the Light, and performed three other pieces (Muse, Meditation, O’Carolan’s Recess) at the Carolan Memorial Service, Anna Maria, FL. Tableaux #1 was first heard in a concert by the London Chamber Group, London, England.

Performances

Little Babe was performed by June Fantaski, accompanied by the composer, in December 2003 at the Sarasota-Manatee SAI Alumnae Christmas Luncheon. Organist Chris Oelkers presented Muse, In the Light, Meditation, and O’Carolan’s Recess, on May 20, 2004, in Kansas City, KS. Narrator Lydia Bledsoe, accompanied by the composer at the piano, performed A Cinderella Fantasy, along with excerpts from Hunkitchy Man, Tailypo, and The Wise Woman, September 23 at the Appalachian Festival, Baker, WV.
