The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Donald GranthamPremieresLove Came Down, for SATB a cappella, commissioned by the Texas Lutheran University Chamber Singers, premiered September 18, 2003. The Trio Contraste presented its commissioned work, Meditations on Yeats for clarinet, violin, and piano, on October 11 in Round Top, TX; the work was also performed by the trio in Germany on August 13 in Koblenz and August 20 in Nordhessen. Fantasy on ‘La Golondrina’, commissioned by Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble, was premiered October 12 by the ensemble under the direction of Cody Birdwell. The University of Houston (TX) Percussion Ensemble, directed by Blake Wilkins, premiered the commissioned work Houston Strokes, for large percussion ensemble, on November 10; the ensemble performed the work a second time at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Twilight Music for orchestra, commissioned by the Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, was first heard February 7, 2004, in a performance by the Tennessee All State Orchestra, Gatlinburg, TN. Baron Cimitiere’s Mambo for wind ensemble, commissioned by the J. P. Taravella Wind Orchestra, was presented May 25 in Coral Springs, FL. PerformancesVarious works for wind ensemble received numerous performances last year in the United States, Japan, and Europe. The Austin Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Peter Bay, performed Southern Harmony, March 19-20, 2004.
