The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Jack BeesonJack Beeson reports: “I am presently writing a book to be called – tentatively titled – Writings About Music, Opera, and Myself. It will consist largely of the printing and reprinting of articles about music and opera, fleshed out by letters to and from me, and a certain amount of autobiographical fat.” PremieresA Rupert Brooke Cycle, a cycle of five songs for bass-baritone and piano to mostly unknown Brooke lyrics (two of which were completed by the composer) was first heard June 24, 2004, in a performance by Eugene Green and pianist Richard Woitach, Good Shepherd Church, New York, NY. Three Viereck Songs, a cycle of songs for bass and piano, was presented October 30 by vocalist Kevin Maynor and Woitach at Smith College, Northampton, MA. The first European performance of the chamber opera Dr. Heidegger’s Fountain of Youth (libretto by Sheldon Harnick), also occurred in 2004 at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England.
