Judith Shatin

Judith Shatin was guest composer in April 2004 for the Dimensions New Music Series at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. In June, she lectured on her music at Tamagawa and Keio Universities in Japan, and presented her interactive computer music work at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) in Hamamatsu. During the summer, she was a fellow for a month at the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio; other residencies during the year include the University of Minnesota School of Music. In November she presented a talk on her interactive piece Tree Music at the International Computer Music Festival in Miami, FL, where her Grito del Corazon was performed. Shatin has been commissioned to create new works for the newEar Ensemble in Kansas City, as well as the Jane Franklin Dance Company in Arlington, VA.

Premieres

Opinion is Power received its world premiere October 26, 2004, on the Election Singers program at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, conducted by Judith Clurman. Cherry Blossom and a Wrapped Thing, for amplified clarinet and electronic playback, was first heard October 27 in the Dome Room of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.

Performances

The New York premiere of Ockeghem Variations, for wind quintet plus piano, took place April 8, 2004, on the Cutting Edge Series at the Renée Weiler Recital Hall in New York, NY. The piano trio View from Mt. Nebo was performed May 26 by the Trio de las Americas at the International New Music Festival Manuel Enriquez, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Mexico. Secret Ground, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, was performed October 2 by the Chameleon Arts Ensemble at First and Second Church in Boston, MA. Grito del Corazon, in a version for video (by Katherine Aoki), electronic playback and saxophone, was performed by Matthew Burtner at the Third Prace Festival in Richmond, VA. The chamber version of Fledermaus Fantasy, a mini-concerto inspired by the Strauss operetta for violin with viola, cello, bass, and piano, was toured in Japan, featuring violinist Karen Murray.
