The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Neil McKayYou are invited to visit the composer’s Web site at www.neilmckaymusic.com. PremieresBop-a-deedle!, for Afro-Caribbean percussion and orchestra, was presented April 4, 2002, by percussion soloist Sangomuyiwa and the Hawaii Youth Symphony led by Henry Miyamura, at Honolulu’s Hawaii Theatre. The work was commissioned by Louis Vuitton Hawaii on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the company’s founding. The works Signature Theme, Goofy Blues and Sof’ Slippa for jazz ensemble, were performed by the University of Hawaii jazz ensemble and dancers at the University of Hawaii Music, Art and Dance Fest, Kennedy Theatre, Honolulu, April 5-6 and 12-14, 2004. Also performed at the festival were new arrangements for jazz ensemble, dancers, and chorus, of four vintage Hawaiian songs. Symphony for Winds (a three-movement, twenty-minute work) was first heard July 23, in a performance by the Honolulu (HI) Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Miyamura, Pearl City Cultural Center, Honolulu. PerformancesLa’ieikawai, Princess of Pali-uli, an opera based on a Hawaiian legend, was performed by members of St. Andrew’s Priory Performing Arts Department, under the direction of Diane Koshi, April 14 and 16, 2004, Tenney Theater, Honolulu (HI).
