The 2005 American Composers Update

as published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2

Ralph R. Guenther

In November 2003 a special recital honoring Ralph Guenther’s ninetieth birthday was given in Seattle, WA, by violinist Randie Guenther Sidlinger, cellist Sally Guenther, and pianist Lisa Bergman. The concert was given in Ida Culver House, where Ralph and his wife Lavonne have lived for some years. An extended article about Guenther written by Bonnie Blanchard, prominent flutist and teacher in Seattle, was published in the October 2004 issue of Flute Talk, a nationally distributed magazine. The article covered details of Guenther’s education and training, his work as a composer (noting his many compositions and transcriptions for young players) and his life as a teacher and performer.

Performances

Members of the SAI Alumnae chapter of Fort Worth, TX, presented How Fast the Moon, a three movement composition for soprano solo and string quartet, for the Euterpean Club of Fort Worth in February 2004; the performance was repeated later in the month for the chapter’s Annual American Composers program. In May 2005, chapter members will perform Three Moods, a composition in three movements for five flutes, for their annual installation of officers.
