Gay Holmes Spears*

Gay Holmes Spears continues to serve as organist and choral accompanist for the Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield, MO, while teaching at Webster University in St. Louis, MO. On March 4, 2005, she participated in a panel discussion with other women composers and performers at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Spears also gave a recital on November 13 at the First United Methodist Church of Paragould, AR, as part of the dedication of the recently installed Nichols and Simpson organ.

Premieres

The anthem O For a Heart to Praise My God was premiered on June 5, 2005, by the women of the Bonhomme Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir, under the direction of Lynn Packwood, accompanied by the composer, Chesterfield, MO. The Ancient Ones, a commission for a 21st Century Women Composers Premieres concert, was introduced October 17 by flutist Jennifer Garrison Brown, percussionist Matt Henry, and pianist Alla Voskoboynikova; the concert was part of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Women in the Arts Festival. The Washington University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dan Presgrave, presented Where the Rivers Run at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, February 2006.

Performances

The song cycle When the Wind Is Southerly was performed in October 2004 by tenor Kevin Lambert and pianist Delana Easley at the University of Tennessee-Martin; it was performed again by Lambert and pianist Tadahiko Imada at Hirosaki University, Japan, on November 2 as part of that university’s International Music Festival. Conversations for Woodwind Quintet was performed February 27, 2005, by the Equinox Chamber Players at First Congregational Church of Webster Groves, MO, and March 4 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis as part of the university’s Women in the Arts Festival.
