The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Harold Schiffman Harold Schiffman is Professor Emeritus of Composition in the Florida State University College of Music. He continues to reside in Tallahassee, FL, (winter and spring) and Robbinsville, NC (summer and fall). He presently serves as a member of the Music Advisory Board of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Premieres Concertino for Flute and Strings was introduced January 9, 2005, by flutist Lisa Hansen and the North/South Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Max Lifchitz, Christ and St. Stephen’s Church, New York, NY. Alma, a cantata based on poems from Wildwood Flower by North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer and excerpts from the Book of Job and the Song of Solomon, received its premiere on April 15 in a performance by mezzo-soprano Nadine Cheek Whitney, the Florida State University Philharmonia (Alexander Jimenez, conductor), and the Florida State University Singers (Kevin Fenton, director), Florida State University College of Music, Tallahassee, FL. Performances Two Country Dances for Lady Jane was performed by pianist Jane Perry-Camp, February 5, 2005, Florida State University Festival of New Music, Tallahassee, FL. Alto saxophonist Harry Bulow presented Fantasy Suite on April 11, University of North Carolina-Charlotte Department of Music, Charlotte, NC. Sonata for Flute and Piano was heard in an April 27 performance by flutist Heather A. Small and pianist Deloise Lima Ohlsson, Florida State University College of Music, Tallahassee, FL.
