The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Jack Gottlieb Beginning in January 2005 and leading up to Jack Gottlieb’s 75th birthday in October, there were numerous performances of his works presented at universities, concert halls, houses of worship, and on radio and television. On September 18 at Central Synagogue in New York (NY), a Concert of Celebration featured the premieres of two choral works: In the Palace of Time and Two Nigunim for Two-Part Singing, along with performances of Two Affirmations, Blessed Be the Name, and various other songs and organ works. A 75th Birthday Recital of cabaret, theater, and sacred songs, as well as instrumental pieces, was presented October 16 at the Parc Vendome, NY; performers included sopranos Ida Rae Cahana and Laura Green, tenor Gregory Mercer, flutist Barry Crawford, and the piano duo of Bernadette Hoke and Eric Birk. Essays by Gottlieb on the music of Leonard Bernstein appeared in Playbill, the liner notes for a new Naxos recording of Bernstein works, and in an issue of Prelude, Fugue & Riffs. The book Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish: How Yiddish Songs and Synagogue Melodies Influenced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood continues to receive rave reviews nationwide. Jeremiah on 9/11 was heard on “Regina Resnik Presents,” CUNY-TV, New York. The piano duet 13 Diversions for Piano Four-Hands received performances in Milan and Montevarchi, Italy, and at Queens College, NY.
