Annual American Composers Update
Daniel McCarthy
Daniel McCarthy is Associate Professor
of Music in Theory and Composition at Indiana State
University, currently on sabbatical; Visiting Associate
Professor of Composition at Depauw University; and Instructor
of Composition, Computer Music, and Theory at the Interlochen
(MI) Arts Camp. He has won grants from the Indiana Arts
Commission and Indiana State University and has received
commissions from Indiana State University, Michigan
State University, and the University of North Carolina
at Greensboro.
Premieres
Played first in Brataslava was Dark
Towers, with the Slovak Radio Symphony, under Robert
Stankovsky, June 14, 1997. Cort McClaren, marimba, and
Edward Bach, trumpet, presented Infinity at the
University of North Carolina, Nov. 20, 1997. 1997 premieres
at Indiana State University included Razdraz,
with Jimmy Finnie, marimba, and Paul Bro, saxophone,
at the Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival
(Oct. 8); and Legacy, with the university's Symphonic
Wind Ensemble, led by John Boyd, for the dedication
of the Center for Performing and Fine Arts (Oct. 8).
Performances
In 1997 conducted by the composer, Finnie
and the Indiana State University Percussion Ensemble
performed Concerto for Marimba, Percussion, and Synthesizers
at the Interlochen Center for the Arts (June 24), and
at the Band and Orchestra Directors Clinic, Chicago
(Dec. 18). On Aug. 14, 1997, Barratt Stees and Keith
Aleo played Bundles of Sticks at the Interlochen
Center for the Arts.
