Annual American Composers Update
Herb Bielawa
Herb Bielawa is a resident of Kensington,
CA. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have commissioned
a work for pipe organ and brass quintet to celebrate
the rededication of the California Palace of the Legion
of Honor's E. M. Skinner organ.
Premieres
At the Society of Composers Region VII
Conference, the Arizona State University New Music Ensemble,
directed by Glenn Hackbarth, introduced More Walking
on Uneven Ground, for saxophone sextet, MIDI, and
piano, Oct. 26, 1996. The composer presented Piece
of 17, for piano and MIDI Tape, at the Bay Area
New Music Marathon of Common Sense Composers' Collective,
Nov. 17, 1996. Max Lifchitz conducted the North/West
Consonance in the premiere of Fluxbands, for
ten instruments, at Christ and St. Stephen's Church,
New York, NY, Jan. 5, 1997. On Mar. 30, 1997, the St.
Stephens Church, Belvedere, CA, Easter service included
the first performance of Psalms of Praise, directed
by John Hirten, for SATB choir, organ, and brass quintet.
Each Dawn, for SATB choir and organ, was heard
first March 23, 1997, with the Chancel Choir at Berkeley
Unitarian Church, conducted by Eric Howe.
Performances
On Apr. 30, 1997 at the University of
California, Santa Cruz, the Ilona Clavier Duo, including
Bielawa, played Walking the Ramp, for harpsichord,
piano, and MIDI tape; and the composer performed Go
For It, for piano.
