Howard J. Buss
Howard J. Buss makes his home in Lakeland, FL. He received
a 1997-98 ASCAP award. In 1997
Modern Times, for
narrator, flute, and four percussion, received reviews
from Robert McCormick in the Florida Percussive Arts Society
Newsletter (Jan.); and from George Frock in
Percussive
Notes magazine (Feb.). A listing of his works is available
on the SAI Composers web site, and his complete works
are in the American Music Center Library, in New York,
NY.
Premieres
The U. S. Air Force Brass Quintet gave the first performance
of
Chromatic Fantasy, Mar. 20, 1997, in Brucker
Hall, Fort Meyer, VA. During the International Clarinet
Association's Clarineffest '97, hosted by Texas Tech Univ.
Lubbock, TX, Marguerite Baker, Richard Meek, and Jennifer
Garrett introduced
Desert Odyssey, for clarinet,
bassoon, and piano, July 10, 1997.
Performances
Flourishes, for two brass quintets, was performed
at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Lincoln, NE,
by the Nebraska Brass Ensemble, Robert Kreuger, director.
Thomas M. Hagen played
Camel Music, for solo trombone,
at Valley City State Univ., Jan. 16, 1997. On Mar. 5,
1997, flutist Julie Hill and the West Point Percussion
Ensemble presented Mysterious Exit at Nyack (NY) College.
Trombone Concerto was heard in Indianapolis, IN,
May 28, 1997, with David Rudd and the Lawrence Noth High
School Wind Ensemble, led by Don Fountain. A University
of South Florida (Tampa) program included Rite of Passage,
for solo marimba, with Robert M. McCormick, Sept. 19,
1997.
