Premieres
On June 17, 24, and 26, 1997, "Angela" and "My Pal Angelo,"
from the musical
Monkey Biz'nis, were heard first,
with singer Wallace Norman and pianist Bill Lewis at Judy's
Cabaret, New York, NY. On June 20, 1997, the Temple Emanu-El,
Westfield, NJ program, An Evening with Composer Jack Gottlieb,
included premieres of
A Blessing for All Occasions
and
Adon Olam (both from the 1970's), and "The
Bullfrog and the Goldfish," from the forthcoming musical
The Family Tree, with Cantor Martha Novick, the
Temple Emanu-El Choir, Geoffrey Petersen, conductor, and
Stanley Schwartz, clarinet. In 1997 pianists Steven Beck
and Jeremie Michael introduced seven excerpts from
The
Silent Flickers, 13 diversions for piano four-hands,
at New York Univ. (Oct. 18) and at Steinway Hall, New
York, NY (Oct. 23), sponsored by the American Composers
Forum New York Chapter. A portion of the work was choreographed
by Juilliard School faculty member Elizabeth Keen for
an August 1997 performance at Skidmore College.
Performances
The Park Avenue Synagogue Temple Choir, with Cantors Robert
Abelson and David Lefkowitz, sang
Y'rushalayim, Shalom
Aleichem with Candle Blessing (first public performance),
Candle Blessing No. 1, and
Mah Tovu, in
New York, NY. At the Three Arts Club, in Chicago, The
Chicago Ensemble, led by Gerald Rizzer, presented
Downtown
Blues for Uptown Halls, May 20, 1997.
